Pea conducted a three-day experiment: she posted profiles on several major dating sites, collected 243 responses without replying to any, then categorized the men by how they presented themselves. She enlisted friends of various ages to rate each profile type on a 1-10 scale (without seeing photos) and averaged the scores. The result is a ranked breakdown of what works and what backfires when trying to attract a Filipina online.
What's Covered β
The experiment methodology
- Pea posted her own profile on several major dating sites (won't name which ones), represented herself accurately but without much detail
- Collected 243 replies over 72 hours, then deleted her accounts
- Grouped male respondents into categories based on their approach and presentation, not appearance or age
- Enlisted friends of various ages and personalities to rate profiles β showed no photos, only described the types of pictures objectively and read the messages aloud
- Each rater scored 1-10 (1 = totally disinterested, 10 = "oh my god please give me his number")
- Averaged scores within each category
The Adrenaline Junkie β Score: 5.8
- Profile full of extreme sports: mountain climbing, skydiving, deep sea diving
- While it's fine to be proud of your hobbies, this scares off most Filipinas
- Women assume you'll want them to do these things too, and they worry they won't measure up
- Very few Filipinas have had opportunities for extreme sports and most don't want to
- Photos of you wrestling an alligator are "a bit too much"
The Novelist β Score: 5.0
- First message is a 10-page essay that reads like a book report
- Getting someone's full life story is nice later in a relationship β but not as an introduction
- "I don't know you yet, I haven't gotten to the point where I care about you yet, and now you've given me the responsibility of reading, comprehending, and writing a response to a novel I didn't want to read"
- Pea prefers "a short trailer to an entire feature length film" β if she likes the trailer, she'll buy a ticket
Mr. Moneybags β Score: 7.1
- Every photo and message centers around his net worth: new Corvette being loaded onto his Learjet
- Financial security is a positive, but extreme cases of "moneybaggery" actually caused scores to drop
- Women can find overly wealthy displays shallow
- Overall the strategy does work β "the figures don't lie, and I guess that's why you do it"
- But Pea warns: "good luck with the scammers"
The Zookeeper β Score: 6.8
- Every photo features adorable animals: kitten on shoulder, puppy on lap, chinchilla on head
- Women instinctively know animals are good judges of character β "if they like him, we should like him too"
- It's sneaky but effective β "a little kitty riding around on the handlebars of his bicycle... that is so cute and so sneaky, because it works"
The Comedian β Score: 7.2
- Pea personally would have scored comedians higher because she appreciates wit
- But humor translates very poorly across cultures in the Philippines
- A Filipina might reply with a smiling emoji while having no clue what you're talking about
- Specific examples of jokes that misfire: "Are you a magician? Because when I look at you, everything else disappears" β she might angrily reply that she doesn't dabble in the occult. "Are you tired? Because you've been running through my mind all day" β she'll send her sleep schedule. "You're so perfect the only thing I want to change is your last name" β she'll ask "what's wrong with my last name?"
- Advice: avoid sarcasm, puns, and lengthy jokes; keep comedy light and project an upbeat personality
The Narcissist β Score: 5.9
- Talks about pumping iron, "balls to the wall" fitness programs
- Shirtless bathroom selfies with shorts pulled down to the pubic hair
- "We don't want a guy who looks at himself more than he looks at us"
- Being obsessed with your own appearance is no more attractive than a woman who spends an hour on makeup just to go to 7-Eleven
- "It's a turn-off everywhere, except Tinder... I take that back, it's even a turn-off there too"
The Butterfly β Score: 3.8
- Makes intentions known upfront with phrases like "no strings attached" and "for fun times only"
- Judging by the score, "they probably aren't getting much fun at all"
- Essentially asking women to give up sex with nothing in return but physical pleasure
- "Even in the Philippines, most women can get sex anytime, anywhere, with almost anyone β it's like advertising free snow to a Norwegian"
The Sugar Daddy β Score: 6.2
- Unlike the Butterfly, actually offers something: comfortable housing, food, travel, vacations β in exchange for companionship
- Marriage is off the table "but sex on the table sure isn't off the table"
- Score nearly doubled the Butterfly's because there's a tangible offer
- Filipinas know exactly what this arrangement is, but it's straightforward with no games
- "It's not the ideal situation, but it'll work for now until something better comes along"
The Apologist β Score: 3.7 (lowest)
- Projects the image of someone who doesn't value himself β "and if he doesn't, why should we?"
- Messages start with "I'm so sorry to bother you," "I hope it's okay to ask you this," "You don't have to answer if you don't want to"
- Clearly trying to be polite and respectful but gives the impression he finds himself annoying
- "There are men who are polite but confident, and then there's the Apologist β one is attractive and one is not"
The Traditionalist β Score: 8.1 (highest)
- Men looking for traditional relationships scored the best, and there were quite a few of them
- Often religious, see marriage as the desired end goal, plans sometimes include children
- Many have specific gender roles in mind
- Very direct in messages β not as much humor, no furry animals, no gym selfies
- What they offer: security and a future
- "Ultimately I guess that's what it's all about for a woman in general and a Filipina in particular"
Pea's overall conclusions and advice
- Confidence, humor, financial stability, and softness for animals create attractive profiles β as long as you don't overdo any one trait
- These are universally appealing across cultures, but the Philippines' unique economic and cultural situation amplifies certain factors
- More desirable here: solid plans for the future and financial security
- Less interesting here: a weightlifter's body or a passion for extreme sports
- "Be yourself but be aware of how women perceive you β be confident, polite, positive, upbeat"
- Don't write a novel for your first message
- "For God's sake, when you're about to upload that shirtless picture of you in the bathroom, hit delete instead β that just doesn't work here"
