WHEN FILIPINAS EXPLODE / From Jealousy To Violence!

Pea examines a real case from the Raffy Tulfo show involving a Filipina named Mercedes who was physically attacked by a group of local women because she was dating a Norwegian man named Sven. The episode illustrates a pattern Pea has warned about in previous videos: people will actively sabotage mixed-culture relationships out of jealousy, and the schemes can escalate from rumors all the way to street violence.

Pea connects this video to her earlier episode "The Relationship Assassins" where she warned that friends, family, co-workers, neighbors — anyone — might try to interfere with a foreigner-Filipina relationship ​

• Interference usually comes as rumors and false gossip designed to make the couple question each other
• But sometimes it can get physical, as this case proves

Why this happens — "Tall Poppy Syndrome" Filipino-style: ​

• Similar to Australia's "tall poppy syndrome," Filipinos tend to cut down the most successful people around them
• Whether the success is in business or love, they can't stand someone being happier than them
• When a Filipina dates a foreigner, "the knives come out" — people know she'll likely have a better life and a higher social status
• Their response is to try to level the playing field through sabotage

The Mercedes and Sven case (from the Raffy Tulfo show): ​

• Mercedes and Sven (Pea's pseudonym for him) met on a dating app and have been together since February of that year
• They say they're very much in love and plan to get married; Sven says "I love her very much" and intends to ask her parents for her hand
• A few days before the interview, Mercedes was attacked by a mob of six local women who had been making her life miserable
• Raffy Tulfo suggests jealousy as the motivation; both Mercedes and Sven agree
• The ongoing harassment: The women would sit like a mob in the streets and shout insults at Mercedes every time she walked by — calling her "monkey" and other slurs
• Sven witnessed this in real time because Mercedes liked to video-call him while out walking, and he could hear the women yelling in the background
• The "prostitute" slur: They called Mercedes a prostitute because she was with a white man — Pea explains this is a standard insult used against any Filipina dating a foreigner, implying she's "selling sex" to attract a high-value mate
• Pea's blunt rebuttal: "If Sven showed interest in any of them, they'd change their tune in about five seconds" — they'd be flattered and try to lock him down immediately, only to have their own friends start harassing them instead
• Calls it "childish and pointless, but that's the way it is here"

The physical assault: ​

• The six women beat Mercedes badly enough that she went to the hospital with bruises and lacerations
• Mercedes recorded video of the attack

The absurd legal twist: ​

• After beating Mercedes, the women sued HER for cyber libel — for posting the video of the attack online
• They also sued for monetary damages claiming they suffered trauma from their own attack and couldn't work for two days afterward
• Pea and Tulfo both see this as an attempt to access the foreigner's money — "if there's a way they can try to go after a foreigner's pockets, they will"
• The lawsuit won't go anywhere because Mercedes has the video evidence and is counter-suing for assault
• The police confirm the mob can be charged with assault and under the anti-bullying law

Additional sabotage: ​

• Mercedes alleges the women used Sven's photo to create a fake social media account and sent fake texts to cause trouble for the couple
• Pea points to this as a textbook example of the "devious plots" she warned about in her earlier video

The accused woman's interview — classic Filipino denial: ​

• One of the accused women claims she did nothing wrong, says she was just coming home from church and Mercedes started filming her group of church-going friends
• Mercedes proves this was a lie by showing call records — she was on a video call with Sven, not filming anyone
• Even after Tulfo plays the video of the attack, the woman keeps denying they touched Mercedes — despite the footage and hospital report
• Pea notes this is extremely common in the Philippines: "You could catch a bank robber on camera, full face, and the person would deny it till their dying day"
• "People just refuse to take responsibility for their actions"

The ending — Sven's plan and Pea's concerns: ​

• At the end of the Tulfo segment, Sven kisses Mercedes on camera (at Tulfo's suggestion, to further annoy the jealous women watching)
• Sven announces he plans to bring Mercedes to Norway — filed for a tourist visa for three months, then will apply for permanent residence
• Pea's warning about this plan:
  • They've only known each other since February and haven't spent much one-on-one time together in the Philippines
  • Mercedes has limited English skills and probably doesn't know Norwegian
  • When a Filipina with poor language skills moves to a Western country, she'll suffer massive culture shock, feel like a fish out of water, and get homesick fast
  • What typically happens next: she seeks out groups of other Filipinos online or in person for comfort
  • She may then be influenced by "westernized" Filipinas — especially single or divorced ones who pump her head full of bad ideas, like convincing her she's not really happy and explaining how she can profit from divorcing her husband
  • Pea clarifies she's not calling Mercedes a bad person or gold digger, but says the language barrier will make fitting into Norwegian culture much harder
  • Standard advice: live in the Philippines together for a few years first until you're confident the marriage will last
  • "Just be careful, Sven"

Pea's conclusions: ​

• This case shows the extreme lengths people will go to in order to destroy a Filipina's relationship with a foreigner
• It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough that couples need to be watchful
• Watch for people spreading rumors and lies out of pure jealousy to break you apart
