Do Filipino Men Resent Foreigners Dating Their Women? Let's Ask!

Pea hits the streets of Dumaguete to interview Filipino men about how they really feel about the growing number of foreigners dating Filipinas. The responses are surprisingly consistent: Filipino men overwhelmingly don't resent foreign men, largely don't see them as competition, and tend to believe the relationships start financially motivated but develop into genuine love. The interviews also surface some fascinating candor about beauty standards, the 6-6-6 rule, and road rage culture clashes.

Interview 1: Articulate young man — the most analytical interviewee ​

• Foreigners come primarily because of lower cost of living — pensions and retirement funds go further in the Philippines
• But also because "the West is going very liberal or very in a way not up to their standards" — so men come looking for women with more traditional values
• Some just come to live and "get a girl to keep them company" — "better than a retirement home"
• Estimates about 45% of Filipinas date foreigners for purely economic reasons — "just a tad bit less than 50%"
• On foreigner behavior: most are polite, but some feel entitled because of their money/status; he's personally seen foreigners on the street targeting girls under 18 — "hey baby" type approaches — and calls it potential exploitation
• Overall, foreigners are a net positive for the economy (bringing foreign money in), but he's "not sure if that's enough" and can't quantify whether the good outweighs the bad
• Bottom line: "As long as they have good intentions, that's all that matters" — and notes that Filipino men can have bad intentions too
• Does not resent foreigners dating Filipinas and doesn't see it as stealing

Interview 2: Young man who lost a girl to a foreigner ​

• Foreigners tend to go for "exotic beauties" — he defines this as darker skin tones
• He's actually happy about this because "I grew up with people saying white skin is beautiful" and foreigners appreciating morenas "shows the different interests of the two worlds"
• Confirms he's heard older Filipinos say foreigners chase "ugly" Filipinas — but he pushes back: "I wouldn't call them ugly... beauty is subjective"
• Has a friend who was pursuing a Filipina when a foreigner came along — the foreigner was friendly at first, the friend didn't think much of it, but eventually the friend's group noticed the foreigner and the girl getting close; in the end she chose the foreigner
• His friend resents the foreigner over it
• When asked to describe his ideal Filipina: "My girlfriend's going to be mad... she's not going to be watching this, for sure" — says "skinny," then admits his girlfriend "used to be" skinny

Interview 3: Young man with a practical perspective ​

• Has seen vlogs of foreigners helping Filipinas' families, thinks that's a good thing
• Foreigners typically meet Filipinas online first, then meet in person, with most women from rural areas and lower economic situations
• Would only resent foreigners if they treated Filipinas badly — specifically mentions that some foreign husbands beat their wives
• On whether foreigners are "stealing" women: "No, because in one family there are like 12 children, all girls — getting one Filipina is not really like stealing our women"
• Goes further: "In fact, we would want some Filipinas to date foreigners if it could help them"
• Confirms foreigners go for the "exotic look" — darker-skinned Filipinas that local men sometimes consider less attractive by Philippine beauty standards
• Also says some foreigners find the Filipino English accent attractive — Pea jokes "maybe I should sound more Filipino when I'm talking in English"

Interview 4: Young woman (despite the video's focus on men) with social media awareness ​

• Foreigners come because the Philippines is a third world country where middle-class Westerners can live as upper class — "bigger houses, good cars, they can live easier"
• Doesn't resent foreigners dating Filipinas even though she acknowledges "it's a sad fact" that many Filipino women see older foreign men as a way out of the country
• Believes most cases start as financially motivated, "but then in most cases as well, love will develop actually"

• But then she challenges the Western women's position: "What do they bring to the table though?... those guys have options... I'm no model, I'm not a Victoria's Secret model" — acknowledging that high-value men with options won't necessarily choose demanding women
• On the "foreigners chase ugly ones" claim: she's seen some couples that are "a mismatch" where "the men could have done better" — but won't judge because "if you want to be with her, I'm not going to judge you for it"

• Personal experience with foreigner rudeness: witnessed a road rage incident where an American on a motorcycle chased down a Filipino who cut him off, screaming at him; the Filipino was genuinely confused because Philippine road rules are "more like a suggestion" — "the first one who gets there goes"

• Most foreigners he's met are polite, though some are rude — gives the example of a foreigner loudly complaining about a long queue at a convenience store
• Overall thinks foreigners coming to the Philippines is not a bad thing

Pea's summary of findings ​

• Filipino men clearly do not resent foreigners dating their women and rarely see them as romantic competition
• The consistent view: foreigners choose women who don't meet local beauty standards, but Filipinos recognize beauty is in the eye of the beholder
