Hook Ups In The Philippines - Is The Culture Changing?

Pea sits down with Alexandra, a provincial Filipina in her twenties who works at a BPO call center in Dumaguete, to explore whether hookup culture is replacing traditional Filipino dating values. Alexandra is blunt, funny, and provides a ground-level view of what it's actually like to date as a young Filipina — including the depressing reality of Filipino men who ask women out and then can't pay for dinner.

Alexandra's background and dating life ​

• She's originally from Bais City, now working in Dumaguete at a call center where she regularly talks to foreigners
• She's single with no kids, and says she's focused on work rather than actively dating
• Her friends and co-workers, however, are heavily engaged with online dating apps

Where young Filipinas meet partners today ​

• Alexandra says it's overwhelmingly online through dating apps
• She argues the platform doesn't matter — "as long as they get along together, the relationship will work"
• For meeting foreigners specifically, women go online; for local guys, there are plenty available in person too

How Alexandra wants to be approached ​

• She prefers someone blunt and direct — approach her yourself and tell her how you feel
• Having a friend deliver the message is "kind of high school" and she has no patience for it
• Notably, she says nobody passed her love notes in high school, which Pea teases her about

First date expectations — and Alexandra's horror stories ​

• She wants a movie date (horror or action films) or a trip to an island — somewhere new and different from her routine
• She fully expects the guy to pay for the first date, without hesitation
• But in practice, she keeps ending up with guys who have no money, and she ends up paying every time
• Her worst date story: a guy asked her to a movie, couldn't afford tickets so she bought them, then he bought only himself a drink (nothing for her), was obnoxiously loud in the cinema, and put his feet up on the chair in front of him — she left after the credits and never saw him again
• She admits this pattern has repeated with multiple different Filipino men
• Pea asks why she hasn't learned to set expectations upfront ("are you paying or are we splitting?") and Alexandra just says "I'm a hopeless romantic"

Physical boundaries and conservative values ​

• Alexandra says on a first date: a hug only, as appreciation — no kissing
• Kissing and more come after a few more dates and getting to know each other
• She explicitly does not believe in sex before marriage — she wants to "preserve her womanhood" for her future husband
• She acknowledges this is increasingly rare among her generation

The hookup culture shift ​

Nude photos are a constant problem ​

• Out of every 10 guys she encounters on dating apps, about 4 will either send unsolicited nude photos or request them from her
• She immediately blocks anyone who does this

Alexandra's ideal man — the "Perfect Mate" breakdown ​

• Height: at least 5'5" or 5'6" — taller than her (she's about 5'3") but not extremely tall
• Skin color: doesn't matter
• Body type: dad bod preferred — she finds it "very masculine"; heavier guys are fine too, not a dealbreaker
• She doesn't care much about physical appearance overall as long as there's personal hygiene (one date had teeth that looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a year)

Biggest turn-offs ​

• Poor personal hygiene (especially dirty teeth)
• Being loud in public spaces
• Constant bragging about money and achievements
• Putting other people down to make themselves look better

Red flags on dating profiles ​

• Any indication of "hookups only" in their bio — she immediately swipes away
• She's "dating to marry" and has zero interest in casual arrangements

Tinder in the Philippines vs. the West ​

• Pea notes that Tinder is basically a hookup app in the West, but in the Philippines there are genuinely people looking for real relationships on it

Views on exes ​

• Alexandra does not believe in being friends with exes (Pea agrees)
• Her reasoning: "There's a reason why you broke up — you either love them or you don't love them at all"
• She clarifies this doesn't apply to someone you have a child with, which is "a different kind of ex"
• A partner texting an ex-girlfriend is not "maturity" — it means they still have feelings

What foreigners are afraid of when dating Filipinas ​

• Alexandra says foreigners worry she's not genuinely attracted to them and is only after their money
• They might feel insecure because she's young and pretty and they think it's "not possible" she could truly love them

Where Alexandra sees herself in five years ​

• Not in the Philippines — she wants to live in a country with four seasons
